There is no other place quite like Iceland. With its world-class waterfalls, rugged sea coasts, glacial lagoons, ice caves, mountains and beaches. Not to mention, great chances for Northern Lights.

Dusty Doddridge and Josh Merrill will be leading a maximum of 8 photographers to explore Iceland’s best, including the classic locations along the South Coast, as well as some lesser known spots that offer excellent photographic opportunities. We’ll photograph Northern lights, if/when they are out, juxtaposed against some of the most incredible landscapes in the world. After visiting the South Coast, we’ll head over to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula on Iceland’s West Coast. If you haven't experienced and photographed Iceland during the Winter, this is your opportunity!

ITINERARY

Diamond Beach Aurora.jpg

Day 1, February 14, 2020 (Keflavík/Reykjavík) - Our adventure will begin with your arrival at Keflavík International Airport. We will meet you upon your arrival at the Keflavík International Airport (airport code KEF) on the morning of February 14th, and bring you straight to the hotel. This evening, we will meet in our hotel for a welcome dinner and to talk about the upcoming tour. Although the plan is to get a good night's rest this evening, we will keep a close eye on the Aurora Borealis forecast and sky conditions, as we will be doing throughout the tour. If things look good for the Aurora this evening, we'll head out to capture it!

Days 2-4, February 15-18, 2020 (Jökulsárlón/Hofn) - On the morning of the 15th, we’ll head east, along the South Coast, stopping to photograph on our way to the area around Jökulsárlón/Hofn. This will be one of our primary bases of operation. We’ll visit highlights, such as the famous Diamond Beach, with Icebergs along the black sand beach. We’ll explore the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, as well as mountain scenes further east, such as Vestrahorn, on the Stokksnes Peninsula, and Eystrahorn. We’ll also photograph the south coast’s glaciated terrain, even taking a guided tour into one of the Vatnajökull glacier’s Ice Caves. Good light in Winter can last a long time... sometimes for hours. Although we will be well-positioned at sunrise and sunset, we will also take advantage of favorable lighting conditions, even at mid-day. If the Aurora appears, we will be out photographing. Our shooting locations in. When weather becomes less interesting, we will use our time to cover a variety of basic and advanced landscape post-processing techniques.

Days 5, February 18-19, 2019 (Vík í Mýrdal) - On February 18th, we’ll change locations to Vík í Mýrdal. in Vik, we’ll photograph some very dramatic sea stacks and black sand beaches. We’ll also be within reach of several top notch waterfalls, and we’ll choose photo locations based on the weather that we experience.

Day 6-7, February 19-21, 2020 (Snæfellsnes & Departure) - Following another morning of photographing in and around Vik, we will again change locations, driving towards the West Coast, and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We’ll stay on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula for our final two nights, Photographing a stunning variety of scenes. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is home to wild coastline, volcanic lava fields, waterfalls, quaint churches, and that’s not to mention the ever famous Mount Kirkjufell, with Kirkjufellsfoss at its base. We’ll photograph our final sunrise on the morning of February 21st, and then we’ll begin our drive back to KEF/Keflavík International for your late afternoon/evening flights home.

SKILL LEVEL AND CAMERA EQUIPMENT

This photo tour is open to photographers of all skill levels. The low instructor-to-participant ratio allows us to spend more time with each participant. At minimum, however, you should be familiar with your camera's controls and understand the basics of composition. There is no need to worry if you do not have experience with night photography, as we will be teaching these techniques early in the tour.

Ice Cave HDR.jpg

For night photography, you will get better results with a camera that can handle ISO's in the 1600-3200 range with relatively little noise. A wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/2.8 or wider is desirable. Contact me if you have any questions on this. You should bring lenses in the wide-angle through telephoto range to capture the myriad of photographic opportunities in this region. We will be teaching post-processing techniques in Photoshop and Lightroom, so bring your laptop. Bring enough memory cards... generally at least 100 gigs or more. Bring extra camera batteries and, as always, a tripod.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING

Winter in Iceland is not typically as cold as you might think. Highs in February average near 37 degrees, with lows of 28 degrees. So, you will likely experience temperatures slightly higher and lower than freezing for much of the trip, with some potential cold snaps below that. Bottom line – you will want to be prepared for cold weather. When outside, we will be within a short walking distance of our vehicle at most times.

TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS

Making your air arrangements - For those of you flying in from the U.S. or Canada, we recommend doing the following: 1) Buy a roundtrip ticket that arrives in KEF (Keflavik International Airport) that arrives on February 14th. Most of these flights will depart the US on the evening of February 13th, and will arrive the morning of February 14th. We can advise on the specifics as flights become available.

For your return travel, book your travel back from KEF to your home destination on a flight that leaves late in the afternoon, or in the evening of February 21st. This will ensure that we have enough time to photograph one final sunrise on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula prior to driving towards KEF.

As for local transportation, we will comfortably travel in vans. Many of our drives will be short, but we will have many drives of 60 minutes or more. Iceland is a wild place, both the landscape and the weather. For the sake of chasing aurora, we may need to drive out of our way to dodge cloud cover. Furthermore, Volatile weather systems have the potential to affect our ability to photograph certain types of scenes, and even our ability to get around. We will work our hardest to get you to the best locations to photograph, based on the conditions that we experience, but we will always do so with safety first.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

There will be no extremely long hikes on this trip. Generally, we will be walking very short distances on snow and ice covered paths which are sometimes at an incline, as well as positioning ourselves on potentially slippery rocks, snow and ice. So, having good balance and the ability to walk up and down an incline (such as from a parking lot down to the shore) in snowy and icy conditions is important.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We strongly suggest you purchase emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation insurance for this trip.
